Lindsey Williams, who has been an ordained Baptist minister for 28 years, went to Alaska in 1971 as a missionary. The Transalaska oil pipeline began its construction phase in 1974, and because of Mr. Williams' love for his country and concern for the spiritual welfare of the "pipeliners," he volunteered to serve as Chaplain on the pipeline, with the subsequent full support of the Alyeska Pipeline Company. Because of the executive status accorded to him as Chaplain, he was given access to information documented in his eye opening book, The Energy Non-Crisis.
After numerous public speaking engagements in the western states, certain government officials and concerned individuals urged Mr. Williams to put into print what he saw and heard, stating that they felt this information was vital to national security. Admittedly, we are being manipulated. At the same time, because we have these resources I question why the logic is to squander them. After all, in the 70's, we got about 24% of our oil from overseas. Today, that figure has grown to over 70%. We consume far more oil than any other country in the world, per capita. In our society, 750 out of 1000 own cars. In China, about 45 in 1000 own cars. Our consumption of oil is out of pace with reality. We have 4% of the worlds population and yet consume 25% of the oil worldwide. We are out of control and until we conserve, not matter what resource we have, we will deplete it and cry to the world we don't have enough. No one is talking about water. Yet we consume more water than any other country on the planet. And if we don't change our thinking, we will be facing shortages in water than will cut much deeper than the oil problem. I don't like to be ripped off by paying almost $5. a gallon for diesel, but our populous has brought this on ourselves. Does every member of our family need a car. And if so, why do we need a 250 or 350 hp engine to take us from point A to B when there are vehicles which can carry four around that have one fourth or less horsepower. And one other point, the environmenalists are primarily at fault for many of our woes, from Prudhoe to the fires in California. For example, we do not do controlled burning. Mother nature and arsenists do it and neither exercises any control. Yet we bow to environmentalists because either no one thinks they have the time or their vote means nothing or they develop a bleeding heart for the flag wavers of the world. We have all ignored the ability to live and exercise the freedoms granted to us in a democratic society by not getting involved and, instead, turned our nation into a mass of finger pointers who would prefer to say the oil company or the government or my next door neighbor is the reason why we have to deal with the price of oil. Wake up America!
